As the weather is getting warmer I have been craving the refreshing taste of Acai Bowls again. I love making these on weekend mornings when I can craftily top them and enjoy slowly with my cup of coffee. Below is one of my favorite go to acai bowl recipes:
Creamy Mango Acai Bowl
1 sambazon unsweetened frozen acai packet
½ cup almond/coconut milk
1 tbs of maca powder
scoop of plant based vanilla protein
handful of greens (changes the color of your bowl to a brown tint, but still tastes amazing)
2 tbs hemp seeds or 1 tbs of chia seeds
handful of shredded coconut
other ½ of your mango sliced/cubed
Spring is finally here and what better way to celebrate than with a delicious papaya smoothie recipe featuring seasonal ingredients, and superfoods of course, to get you in the mood. I usually do not gravitate towards fruit smoothies, but this recipe is filled with nutrients and flavor combinations that allow you to sneak in some awesome superfoods and spices to really make it a slam dunk nutritionally. It is perfect for a post workout indulgence!
Spotlight on Papaya:
Papaya contains high levels of Vitamin C (about 150% of your daily value in just half of the fruit) and Vitamin E, as well as a large number of antioxidants. These antioxidants are known to help fight against cancer as well as many heart related diseases. Papaya is known to boost your immune system because of its cell strengthening properties. This fruit also contains Vitamin A which is known to protect the retinas in your eyes; preventing certain eye diseases and macular degeneration.
Papaya is most widely known to help improve digestion. It contains an enzyme that helps break down proteins in your body which helps gastrointestinal issues and keeps everything moving properly.
Papaya is also known for its amazing affects on the skin. The levels of vitamins and antioxidants in papaya work to fight against skin cell damage. Many nutritionists and natural beauty experts actually rub raw papaya on their skin to help eliminate blemishes, spotting, and heal wounds.
It is hard to even attempt to describe what ExpoWest is really like. A three day event of pure craziness basically sums it up in the best way. ExpoWest was hosted at the Anaheim Convention Center out in California this past weekend and is a Natural Product Convention. Natural Products can include everything from food to house cleaners to vitamins & supplements. I had the great opportunity to attend ExpoWest with DRINKMaple. I helped man the booth with Co-Founders Kate and Jeff as they went in and out of meetings. I was also fortunate to have some time to explore the four story convention center filled with all my favorite natural companies for a few hours each day. I rounded up some of my favorite new product discoveries which include some new companies I hadn’t heard of, as well as new product launches announced from some of my favorite brands at the Expo!
Here is my short roundup (I could list a million great products) so keep your eyes peeled in the coming weeks for these new products to launch in your local stores:
Paleo Baking Mixes: Finally, an easy approach to making paleo chocolate chip cookies, banana bread, pumpkin bread, PIZZA DOUGH, as well as many other options that all taste delicious.
DRINKMaple launched their new logo and amazing new packaging options that will appear in stores this spring; including a twist top bottle as well as a liter size. The twist top is great for on the go and athletes and the liter is great for those who want to keep a bottle in their refrigerator to use in smoothies or cocktails!
Lastly, a shout out to some of my favorite companies not mentioned above that provided me with multiple samples every day as I passed their booth:
Sambazon: Acai Bowls topped with banana and granola Navitas Natural: Power Snacks (Blueberry Hemp flavored) Pure7Chocolate: Espresso Dark Chocolate
Eating Evolved: Dark Chocolate Coconut Cups Health Ade: My morning dosage of Kombucha (loved the cayenne flavor)
Recently, I have become hooked on these tiny little Superfoods called Hemp Seeds. These seeds contain all the essential amino acids and essential fatty acids required to maintain healthy human life. There is no other single plant source that has these in such an easily digestible form or in as perfect ratio to meet the nutritional needs of a human. If that doesn’t scream Superfood, than what does?
What makes them a Superfood?
– High in Magnesium, Iron & Zinc
– Contain 20 amino acids
(including the 9 essential amino acids our body needs to survive)
– High in Protein per serving (10g)
Specifically, Simple Protein which strengthens your immunity and fends off toxins
-Contains Omega 3 & 6 Fatty Acids
(The Perfect Ratio 4 omega 6 to 1 omega 3)
– Low in Carbohydrates and High in Fiber
-Provide long lasting energy : makes them a great addition to breakfast 🙂
How to use them?
– Add into smoothies
– Sprinkle on yogurt
– Mix into Oatmeal
– Sprinkle on top of salads
– Mix into baked goods: breads, muffins, and granola
Unlike many other seeds, such as flax, you CAN have hemp seeds daily and it is actually recommended since there is a perfect ratio of EFA (Essential Fatty Acids). They are one of the safest foods on the planet and are great substitutions for people that suffer from food allergies or digestion problems and are a great source of protein for vegetarians.
What do they taste like?
Hemp seeds have a slight nutty flavor but are not over powering. They add great flavor to all of the above without overpowering. I enjoy them mixed into my Vanilla Siggi’s topped with lots of fruit or in my Green Smoothie recipe.
Where can you buy them?
Many companies and stores sell shelled hemp seeds in bulk or in bags. Once opened store these seeds in your refrigerator.
– Trader Joes
– Whole Foods Market
– Amazon, Vitacost, and other online health shops (Navitas Naturals)
– Selective big chain grocery stores in the health food aisles
I highly recommend adding this Superfood into your diet weekly if not daily!
