Orange Theory Fitness

Have you heard of OTF? If not, you will very soon. Orange Theory Fitness is a boot camp style workout studio that started out in Florida & Arizona and is quickly opening many different locations along the East Coast as well as nationally. OTF opened in Boston just under a year ago and is opening a second location a little closer to where I live in Natick, MA. OTF Natick is scheduled to open sometime this April or early May, but in the meantime, they are putting on events in order to get the community excited about the workout. This past Sunday I attended their 60 minute boot camp workout at Athleta in the Natick Mall.

What is the OTF workout all about?

The workout is an hour and is composed of three parts; a session of treadmill intervals, a session of indoor rowing, and a final session of weight and resistance training. What sets OTF apart from all other boot camp studios is their state of the art heart rate monitoring system. Each client wears a heart rate monitor during the duration of class. Each individual’s heart rate is projected on a monitor seen by everyone in class. Having this feature allows you to aim to keep your heart rate in the target zone for each exercise; this maximizes energy levels and metabolism which allows you to burn the most calories. This heart rate monitoring is great for accountability, group workout encouragement & support, and of course, motivation.

Whether weight loss or increased performance is your goal, this workout will provide you with great results!

How was the experience of the preview workout at Athleta Natick?

Obviously, OTF couldn’t bring in any cardio equipment to Athleta, so the 60 minute boot camp wasn’t like a traditional class will be at the studio. This hour was broken into four sections:  A tabata session, strength and toning session, jump rope and resistance band interval, and lastly a session of core and ab exercises. The 60 minute class was a great way to get to know the trainers and the overall style and atmosphere of OTF. It was a lot of fun, an awesome workout and the turnout was great.

Look for OTF studios near you and definitely give this workout a try. If you are local and interested in the new Natick location check out their social media sites!

Women & Weight Training: Five Reasons to Start Now

“The stronger she became..the stronger she became”

Many women are wary of lifting weights at the gym. I have definitely been one of them; it is intimidating if you do not know what you are doing. Weight and strength training is becoming much more popular among many of the studio workout classes for this reason. Studies have shown that women who incorporate strength training into their workouts are not only more likely to gain confidence physically, but also mentally & socially. In my opinion, this is the best reason to start weight training now. There is nothing more rewarding than having and radiating self confidence. Recently, there have been many new movements by popular athletic brands to express this ideology: Under Armour’s “I Will What I Want” campaign, Athleta’s Girls on the Run Program, and Reebok’s “Be More Human” campaign.

Here are 5 additional reasons you should start adding some weight training into your weekly workout routine:

  1. Lean Body Mass
Weight training allows you to preserve muscle mass which your body naturally loses and replaces with fat as you age.
Fun Fact: 1 pound of fat takes up to 18% more room than a pound of muscle
  2. Burn More Calories & Increase Metabolism
Weight Training works to eliminate body fat while building lean muscle tissue which then allows you to more efficiently burn calories. Weight Lifting spikes your metabolism long after the workout, because your muscles need energy to repair their fibers.
  3. Increases Bone Density
Over time bone density can begin to decrease; strength training will prevent this from occurring as well as help prevent bone related injuries.
  4. Heart Healthy
Decreases blood pressure and lowers the risk of death from cardiovascular diseases & cancer.
  5. Overall Lifestyle
Studies have shown that weight lifting aids in stress relief, depression, improves sleep patterns, and increases productivity.

Girls Night Out with Athleta Natick

IMG_6309 IMG_6310

I was honored and excited to team up with Athleta in the Natick Mall to put together a private event, to both promote my blog and their new line of fall activewear. Last night, some of my favorite ladies and I had the store to ourselves for two hours after it closed. Athleta fashion stylists assisted in styling all of the ladies as they sipped on “cocktails” being mixed up by the Polar Seltzer Team. The ladies were all entered into a raffle for an Athleta gift card and everyone walked away with goodie bags filled with samples from: Athleta, David’s Tea, and Lush Cosmetics. The event turned out to be a blast and all the women walked away with some new apparel.

Some of the big hits of the night were Athleta’s new line of fall sweaters and tunics. The ladies loved that they could be worn over your tank to class or can easily be dressed up with jeans or leggings to wear around town. Another favorite was the Metro style leggings; these leggings are slightly thicker and softer than the others and have cute pockets on the back that make them look like actual pants. These could also be worn to class or dressed up in boots for a cute fall outfit. Everyone found something they loved and the stylists were a huge help recommending items.

Athleta Natick is hosting an upcoming event this Sunday the 12th at 9:30am. A local PIYO instructor is coming in to teach a free class. I will be there and highly recommend everyone in the area to come if they can as well. It is a great new workout trend that I am anxious to try! PIYO features various styles of Yoga and Pilates in a continuous movement and flow from one exercise to another. You get to enjoy the benefits of deep breathing, balance, stretching, strengthening and relaxation to some awesome music.

Stay tuned for more events like these from Athleta Natick and I. I am excited to continue to team up with them to put on some great events!
